Houston Briscoe is from West Louisville and grew up around the corner from the new hospital, located at the Norton Healthcare Goodwill Opportunity Campus. The first-year plumbing apprentice, employed by Hussung Mechanical Contractors, has been working to install plumbing inside the hospital.

Houston is part of the Urban Workforce Development Initiative (UWDI), a program developed by the hospital’s general contractor, Harmon/Messer. In partnership with Norton Healthcare and the Louisville Urban League, the initiative invests in the career growth of minorities and women through workforce development and diversity in the construction industry.

Anthony L. Mathis, system director, sustainability and supplier diversity, Norton Healthcare, talked about the new approach to this construction project and how it has brought so many together. He recognized and honored Jessica Barr, a longtime Norton Healthcare construction team member who passed away in August after battling breast cancer. Jessica was instrumental in helping the construction team reach this point in the project. Her family also believed in the vision for this hospital and what it would mean to the community.

First Norton West Louisville Hospital steel beams maneuvered into place.

Norton Healthcare is building the first new hospital west of Ninth Street in more than 150 years. Located at 28th Street and West Broadway, Norton West Louisville Hospital will bring care that addresses the needs of those who live in the area. The new hospital location will share the Norton Healthcare Goodwill Opportunity Campus with many services offered through Goodwill Industries of Kentucky.

The Eclipse housing development is planned to open in 2024 in the Russell neighborhood and will provide residents an opportunity to get paid healthcare training designed to lead to careers at Norton Healthcare.
